Emerging fatal viruses like Lyssavirus found in bats: Does Bible Prophecy reveal that they will reduce the human population?
Ebola, H1N1, HIV, Covid-19, pestilence like the Black Death, lyssavirus causing paralysis and death found in bats: Increasing numbers of life-threatening viruses are expected to be transmitted by wild animals. Such viruses, like Covid-19, undergo genetic mutations that create new strains and become more contagious, thus spreading like wildfire in human populations. Pandemics will be the “new normal” with devastating effects on “civilization”. Does Bible Prophecy reveal that they will reduce the human population and what are the causes of pandemics?
While SARS-Cov-2 is believed to have started in bats, the populations of rats, bats, insects and wild beasts that are seen as a threat to human civilization are multiplying… Blood samples of people who contracted the Ebola virus show that it had an 88% lethality rate. The majority of highly infectious diseases that occur in humans first appear in animals. Will the proliferation of wild beasts lead to a sharp decrease of the human population in the near future? What does the Bible say?
When the ancient prophet Habakkuk prophesied about God’s Judgment of humanity, he described:
“He had rays flashing from His hand, And there His power was hidden. Before Him went pestilence, And fever followed at His feet.”
The Hebrew word for “pestilence” is “דָּ֑בֶר” and first appears in the Bible when Moses tells Pharaoh to let God’s people go, so that they can go and worship God unless He falls upon them with “pestilence.” When Pharaoh refused, God judged him with the 10 plagues of Egypt:
1) All the rivers turned to blood – there was no drinking water
2) Frogs invaded everywhere - even beds and ovens
3) All the dust of the land became lice
4) Swarms of flies filled the land and all the houses
5) Murrain – all the livestock of Egypt died of pestilence
6) Boils broke out in sores on Man and beast
7) Hail mingled with fire fell upon the land – all men and animals that were outside died
8) Locusts swarms that filled the land were so thick that the land was darkened – they ate every plant that remained
9) Darkness covered the land – it was so oppressive that it could be felt
10) All the firstborn of Egypt died at midnight on the same
night – there was not a house where there was not one
Wild beasts are the instrument of God’s wrath: “Son of Man, when a land sins against Me by persistent unfaithfulness: I cause wild beasts to pass through the land, and they empty it, and make it so desolate.” The Book of Revelation gives insight into Bible Prophecy about the future of sinful humanity and the role played by wild animals: “So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the Earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the Earth.”
Here, we see that wild animals contribute to the reduction of the human population. And to the people who are left and who do not repent of their sins: “Then out of the smoke, locusts came upon the Earth. And to them was given power, as the scorpions of the Earth have power. And they were not given authority to kill them, but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man. In those days, men will seek death and will not find it.”
A “plague” – “רֶ֫שֶׁף” in Hebrew - is to smite with a burning arrow. After God’s gives Moses the Ten Commandments, He states that, if the people refuse to obey His Commandments, He will appoint “wasting disease and fever.” After that, if the people still refuse to obey God’s Commandments, He will punish them seven times more for their sins:
“I will bring on you seven times more plagues, according to your sins. I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children, destroy your livestock, and make you few in number.”
And if the people still refuse to repent of their sins and obey God’s Commandments, Bible Prophecy reports the words of God:
“I will punish you yet seven times for your sins:
I will send pestilence among you.
When I have cut off your supply of bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall bring back your bread by weight, and you shall eat and not be satisfied.
I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars, and cast your carcasses on the lifeless forms of your idols:
I will lay your cities waste.”
But for the people who confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers, if their uncircumcised hearts are humbled and they accept their guilt, God says:
“I will not cast them away, to utterly destroy them and break My covenant with them; for I am the Lord their God.”
